Where I get my papers from

This blog was originally meant to be about web development, but after writing just one programming article, I pivoted to writing paper summaries for the most part, partly to keep track of what I’ve read and partly as a way to find a topic I could do a PhD on.

Since then, eight years have passed. I still don’t have a PhD, nor have I found a topic for a potential PhD yet. But I am nonetheless doing paid work as a researcher at a university of applied sciences (side note: Before I took this job I didn’t even know this is something one could do without a PhD!), and the general expectation is of course that I publish my findings at some point.

I’m exploring possible venues where I might be able to publish my work. Mostly I just look at where papers on similar topics are published, but I thought it would also be fun to compile a list of the journals and conference proceedings of all the papers that have been featured in this blog’s The Toilet Paper section over the past eight years. The result can be found in the table below, which is updated automatically every day, even if the date at the top of this article doesn’t.

As you can see, the papers I write about (side note: Most of the papers I read nowadays are too specific and too far removed from the topics I cover on this website.) are mainly published in proceedings and journals about software engineering. A handful are about other topics, such as human factors in computing and artificial intelligence, but the rest is just one very long tail of journals dedicated to seemingly random topics.
