Links

A collection of links to personal sites, blogs, social media accounts, and other things on the Web that I find interesting enough to share here.

Public transport

Content about a special interest that has most definitely gone off the rails.

Francis Bourgeois

Despite what you might think when you look at this website, I don’t actually like trainspotting. But Francis Bourgeois does, and he makes videos about it.

Interactive map of the Dutch railway network

This interactive metro-style map of the Dutch railway network, created by UI/UX designer and data engineer “Mr. Z”, shows how train services operated on 13 July 2026.

The Man in Seat 61

The man in Eurostar’s seat 61 is Mark Smith. He maintains a comprehensive website from a bygone era with useful information for pretty much anyone needing to travel internationally by train. This man has saved me a lot of stress during my travels.

The sound that Dutch VIRM trains used to make

That sound was the soundtrack to my student years. I really miss the distinctive, bagpipe-like sound of older VIRM trains, produced by their Holec GTO-VVVF traction systems.

The Tim Traveller

Although The Tim Traveller makes videos about more than just public transport, he has made enough about it to earn him a place here.

Tom Scott

Tom Scott needs no introduction. He is somewhere you are not.

Urbanist Ariel

Ariel doesn’t just make videos about public transportation, but it does come up a lot. He also makes videos about urban planning, architecture, and other topics that are relevant to the way we move through cities.

(Former) friends and colleagues

Personal websites and other online stuff in English, built by people I know or have known in the past.

Niels van der Weide

Niels works on complex mathematical topics I do not purport to understand, such as homotopy type theory.

Nienke Dekker

One of the few people outside of academia I know personally who also has a somewhat active personal website.

Completely random stuff

Things that didn’t fit into any of the other categories.

How TV stations join together for Eurovision – and who messed up

This may be one of my all-time favourite videos on YouTube, second only to the multiviewer of the 2024 edition in which the Netherlands was disqualified.
