This privacy policy is for the alpha versions of the AI4Debunk browser extension and collaborative platform that help users recognise disinformation. This software is only made available to selected testers within the AI4Debunk development team. If you have not received an invitation and/or do not know how to contact us, you should not use the software.
This policy is temporary and will be replaced with a definitive version before any public release.
Who are we?
The AI4Debunk collaborative platform is developed by Innovative Power, while the browser extension is developed by HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht (Hogeschool Utrecht). The underlying system includes contributions from other partners of the AI4Debunk consortium. Only the operations team at HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht has access to data.
What data do we collect?
Our goal is to learn how well AI4Debunk’s detection system and user interfaces work in practice, and where they need to improve. To that end, we collect the following data:
-
Submitted content: You can choose to submit web pages, text, image files, and video files to our system for disinformation checking. During the testing phase, this data may be used to debug issues. We will not share your data with third parties.
-
Language preference: Your browser’s language preferences are used to determine what language to show you the platform or the extension when you first use them.
-
AI4Debunk account: You can log in to your AI4Debunk account to keep track of your current and past content checks across different devices. This is entirely optional.
-
Technical logs: We maintain technical logs that help us troubleshoot and improve our system. We do not log your browsing history or any other personal information. Client-side logs are disabled by default. You can explicitly opt in via settings. If you are participating in a user study, this will have already been done for you.
Legal basis for processing
We process your data for the purpose of testing and validating the user interface and its underlying system. The legal basis is your consent (by participating as an internal tester) and our legitimate interest in improving and validating our product.
Data subject rights under GDPR
As a user, you have the right to:
- Access your personal data
- Correct your personal data
- Erase your personal data (
right to be forgotten
) - Restrict processing of your data
- Object to processing
- Request data portability
To exercise any of these rights, contact us via email or send us a message on Teams.
Data retention
-
During the testing phase, any data you submit (including accounts) will be periodically deleted.
-
If you believe you have sensitive data by mistake, you can contact the developer to have your data deleted immediately. In future versions, you will also be able to delete data yourself.
-
Other submitted data and technical logs are kept only as long as necessary for testing and troubleshooting, after which they are deleted.
International data transfers
Our API may make use of services that are located outside the EU/EEA. This means that your data may be transferred internationally. Where necessary, we use standard contractual clauses or other safeguards to protect your data.
Data security
We take reasonable steps to keep your data secure, including access controls and periodical deletion of uploaded files. However, we kindly request that you do not submit sensitive personal data.
Automated decision-making
No automated decision-making or profiling is performed using your data.
Changes and updates
If we change how data is collected or used, for example if we ever decide to add analytics that require an opt-out rather than opt-in, testers will be informed via the mailing list or technical meeting before changes take effect. This policy will be updated as needed.
Complaints
If you believe your data protection rights have been violated, you can lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
